After the children’s choir director asked Kelly to lip synch and a fifth grade music test told her that rather than playing a musical instrument she should pursue other avenues, she started writing—mainly rebellious, angsty poetry.
Since then, she and her husband have raised four children and several dogs--all of them spoiled--and she graduated from Vermont College of Fine Arts with an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults. She can usually be found in her messy office sporting no make-up, bed head, and sweats.
K.A. Barson is repped by the amazing Sara Crowe of Harvey Klinger, Inc. Her debut, 45 POUNDS (MORE OR LESS), is forthcoming from Viking Children’s Books, summer 2013.
Book description: Ann, a sixteen-year-old girl who doesn’t fit—not in her blended family and certainly not in Snapz! clothes—is convinced that if she could only lose 45 pounds, her life would be perfectly normal. She soon learns that is nothing perfect about normal.
Though not superstitious in the slightest, Kelly knocks on wood, throws pinches of spilled salt over her shoulder, and is very careful around mirrors.
